Harvest Haven Homesteading Workshop

AUGUST 2026 • HARVEST HAVEN EDITION

Practical skills, old-fashioned wisdom, and a little dirt under our nails.

From the Goat Lady's Journal

Dear Friends,

September’s workshop reminded me why I fell in love with so many of these old-fashioned ways in the first place.

I originally started making my own dry mixes because I wanted more control over what was going into the food we ate. I realized I didn’t need all the little boxes and packets filled with ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. With a few simple pantry staples, I could make many of those same things myself, choose the quality of every ingredient, save money, and know exactly what was in the jar.

That same thinking is what drew me deeper into fermentation and herbal infusions. Learning these traditional methods has changed the way I do things in my own home. Instead of always reaching for something commercially prepared, I’ve learned to go back to simple ingredients and methods that people relied on long before everything came ready-made in a package.

For me, homesteading isn’t about doing things the hard way just because they’re old-fashioned. It’s about learning another way—a simpler, more natural way that gives me more control over what I bring into my home and use on the farm.

Simple ingredients. Old-fashioned methods. As natural as we can make it. That’s how we roll here on the farm.

This Month’s Workshop 🌿

September was one of those Harvest Haven afternoons where we had a whole lot going on around the farm!

We continued our fermentation journey, spent time learning about dry canning and putting up herbs and teas, talked about caring for our cast iron skillets, and headed outside to learn more about winterizing the bees.

We even started a few things that weren’t meant to be finished that day. Some homesteading projects need a little time to do their thing—and we’ll be checking back on them together.

There were jars on the table, questions flying, stories being shared and plenty of those “I didn’t know you could do that!” moments.

And that’s the part that’s hard to put into an email.

You really have to be here. 😉

What Should You Be Planting This Month?

Beans and peas are still easy, quick growers to add to the garden right now. And while you’re planting, tuck in some rosemary nearby. Rosemary makes a wonderful garden companion, helping create a diverse planting area while bringing its wonderful fragrance to the garden.

A few seeds, a little sunshine and some rosemary nearby—and your fall garden can still have plenty of life left in it. 🌱
