Now Is the Time to Start Your Fall & Winter Garden

As we talked about at this month’s Harvest Haven Workshop, now is the time to start those seeds for your fall and winter garden. Think cabbage, broccoli, leeks, onions, fall tomatoes, fall and winter squash, carrots, peas, beans, green beans, Brussels sprouts, spinach and dark leafy lettuces.

A good rule of thumb for the cooler garden? Think dark green! Those deep green leafy vegetables are some of the crops we want to concentrate on as we head toward fall and winter.

And don’t just plant vegetables — build a companion garden while you’re at it. Pair your crops with garlic, onions, basil and plants from the mint family. Instead of treating herbs and vegetables as two separate gardens, we can start thinking about how they grow together.

The Goat Lady’s Garden Tip: 🌿
Don’t wait until it feels like fall outside to start your fall garden. Down here, we have to think ahead — start those seeds while Louisiana still feels very much like summer!
