Poultry Handbook — Real Farm Experience Meets Research

Fresh eggs start with healthy chickens—and healthy chickens start with knowing what you’re doing before those adorable little chicks come home.

Here at Cajun Corral Farm, raising poultry has brought us beautiful eggs, plenty of laughs, hard lessons, and a few things we would certainly do differently! I’ve brought those experiences together with research from university Extension programs, agricultural agencies, and trusted poultry resources to create a handbook you can learn from and return to as your flock grows.

Written by Sandra Barbier, “The Goat Lady,” this 68-page Poultry Handbook is packed with practical knowledge across nine chapters, from planning your coop to caring for your chickens through the seasons. You’ll find honest farm stories alongside researched guidance, with references included for further reading.

Why You’ll Love It

🐔 Start with a workable plan. Learn what to consider about zoning, coop placement, shelter, nesting boxes, and predator protection before bringing chickens home.

🥚 Choose chickens that fit your goals. Explore egg-laying, meat, and dual-purpose breeds, along with the personalities that make poultry keeping so entertaining.

🌱 Understand what goes into their feed. Learn about protein, fermented feeding, kitchen scraps, twelve plants from our forage planning, and the different jobs of scratch grains, grit, and oyster shells.

🐛 Raise your own mealworms. Follow step-by-step instructions covering equipment, colony care, development stages, and harvesting while keeping your breeding colony going.

🧺 Build a better egg-collecting routine. Understand laying patterns, the protective bloom, egg handling, refrigeration, and what the float test can—and cannot—tell you.

☀️ Prepare for changing seasons. Find practical guidance for heat, humidity, rain, cold weather, storms, and introducing new birds.

📝 Keep useful information close. Return to daily checklists, supply lists, flock-record ideas, and references when you need a reminder.

Why I Love It

Homesteading began for me long before Cajun Corral Farm. My parents and grandparents shared their knowledge of growing food, preserving the harvest, and caring for animals in a home filled with love and encouragement. Those lessons gave my brother and me a foundation that has stayed with us throughout our lives.

This handbook is one way I can pass that knowledge along. I share what we’ve experienced on our own farm, including the mistakes and difficult moments, because beginners deserve an honest picture of caring for a flock. Combining those experiences with research makes this a resource I’m proud to put my name on.
